Testing for Sleep Apnea
|
If You've Not Yet Been Diagnosed, When and How to Get Tested!
It's estimated that 90% of Americans who suffer from sleep apnea have not yet been tested or diagnosed - that's 90%!!
And it's serious business: apnea is essentially robbing you of life-critical oxygen as well as good sleep. That's why apnea can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, as well as obesity. (yes, obesity! Weight gain not only increases the risk of sleep apnea - apnea actually contributes to obesity, making it harder to not only sleep but also lose weight! The connection between apnea and weight gain is important).
If the apnea sufferer is a pregnant mother or a child, there are serious developmental risks as well.
And if the sufferer drives a car or operates heavy machinery, the risk of injury or death from accidents is drastically increased.
(For more on the risks of apnea, Read this Page for a Report on Apnea Health Risks, authored by the Sleep Mask Institute and available to our visitors for FREE).
Here's a 3-step process for evaluating whether you have apnea and need CPAP or other treatment:
FIRST, ask your bed partner or family members if you, when you sleep in bed or on the sofa, sometimes almost wake up with gasping breaths. Or if you snore in a way that sounds especially desperate or erratic, not just the steady "sawing" that is typical of regular snoring. If you hear that you make gasping sounds or erratic snoring, then go to Step 3.
SECOND, if no one has noticed you make gasping sounds or erratic snoring, but you feel that you wake up exhausted or tend to be sleepy, you still may have apnea. One thing to do is take an Epworth test-it takes about 60 seconds and can be done for FREE by clicking here. If your Epworth score is high, then go to Step 3.
THIRD, get tested! You have different options, depending on your insurance coverage:
- Some insurance companies will let you do a simple "at home" test, where you wear a little device in the comfort of your own home.
- Others require you spend 1-2 nights sleeping at a special medical facility called a sleep lab.
You will need to talk with your Family Doctor or Primary Care Physician, or other doctor to get a prescription for either the at-home or the sleep-lab test.
If you want to educate yourself a bit more before talking with your physician,
call us at (877) 272-7808 (M-F 9am-6pm PST) and speak with one of our respiratory therapists.
But act quickly! The best sleep you've had in years could be around the corner - and it might be critical to avoid some serious health complications (like heart disease, stroke, etc.)
